Facts about Winter Skin
Seasonal changes not only affect wardrobes and lifestyle they also have a big impact on our skin. Colder weather is fast approaching and a harsher climatic environment means our reliance on heating and exposure to cold outdoors can cause havoc and create what we call “Winter Skin”.
Winter skin happens when natural lipids present on the surface of our skin (epidermis) diminish and leave the skins natural barrier unprotected. These natural lipids are ceremides, cholesterol and fatty acids which serve and protect the skin against the environment but also to trap the skins own hydration. (Dr Spiller Biocosmetics). As the barrier function loses protection from the natural oils, consequently the skin becomes drier, increasing risk of scaling and flaking. If this is left untreated it can lead to eczema and dermatitis. Lower humidity and relying on heaters and artificial environments, taking long hot showers can all further exacerbate the situation.
To reduce the affect of Winter Skin you can implement the following:
-
Protect and trap skins natural moisture by using a water-in-oil emulsion System such as Dr Spiller Biocosmetics to maintain good barrier function.
-
Richer moisturisers which contain the right oils can reduce TEWL (Trans epidermal water Loss)
-
Regular exfoliation will further ensure absorption and efficiency of moisturizers.
-
Another important factor is changing your cleanser to a more creamy cleanser such as the Cleansing Milk with Cucumber Extract or the Cleansing Cream with Royal jelly Dr Spiller Biocosmetics.
-
Have regular facials to help boost the skins moisture levels
Dr Spiller Biocosmetics Unique Hydratain Emulsion System guarantees to keep your skin in optimal health all year round.
